THE REPUBLIC OF KOMI




The Republic of Komi was founded on August 22, 1921

The Republic of Komi is located in the far North-East of European Russia

The territory is 416,800 km² (2,4% of Russia territory)

The length from the South-West to the North-East is 1,275 km

Population – about 1 mln people

The capital is Syktyvkar (population 245,000). It is located 1,410 km to the North-East from Moscow

The republic borders with Arkhangel, Sverdlovsk, Kirov and Perm regions, Nenets, Yamal-Nenets and Khanty-Mansy autonomous districts

The Strategy of the Republic of Komi Economic and Social Development for 2006-2010 till 2015 was developed and adopted by the Komi Government. The Strategy defines the main aims and priorities of the regional economic and social development

Industrial Potential

The Republic of Komi is an industrial region of Russia.

Industry is represented by more than 30 branches. Industrial companies employ 26% of the total labor, they also concentrate 25% of capital funds.

Timber industry ranks second in the economy of the region. It is represented by forestry, harvesting, woodworking, pulp and paper companies

Natural and Recreation Resources

Mineral resources include fuels, ferrous, non-ferrous minerals and underground waters.

The fields tested on the republican territory contain about 80% of quartz fibers, 50% of titanium, 30% of bauxites, 50% of barites, 4.5% of coal and 3% of oil from the all Russia stocks.

Due to its reserves and extraction volumes the republic is the main fuel supplier (coal, oil) for the Russian European North.


Forest is one of the main treasures in Komi

Total forest area is 38,678 mln hectares that is 93% of the Komi territory. Annual cut is 26,4 mln м³

Accessible timber resources

Natural parks. Protected areas

Protected areas cover 15% of the total area of the region. It is the biggest European virgin woodland remained.

Pechora-Ilych State Reserve (721,300 hectares);

Yugyd-Va National Park (about 1,9 mln hectares)


Tourism

Presently the internal and external tourist routes are being developed. The most perspective project here is “The Taiga Ring” tourist area that covers 9 municipalities in Komi
