Museums and exhibition halls

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF KOMI REPUBLIC. Kommunisticheskaya St, 6. Tel: (8212)24-11-73. The Komi National Museum Complex consists of several museums, the majority of which are in Syktyvkar. Located in different buildings of the historical part of the city, they present in detail the nature, history, economy and culture of the Komi Republic. The museum was founded in 1911 on the initiative of the Ust-Sysolsk department of the Archangelsk society for the study of the Russian North. One of the founders – and the first director of the museum – was A.A.Tsember, regional ethnographer, folklorist and compiler of the Russian-Zyryansk dictionary. The museum has a unique collection, consisting of more than 220 000 individual items. The archeological collection including unique items from the Mesolithic period – from 7 000-6 000 – from the Lake Sindor area. Also to be noted are the icon collection of the 15-20th centuries, manuscripts and old books, and numismatic and ethnographic collections.

NATIONAL ART GALLERY OF KOMI REPUBLIC. Kirov St, 44. Tel: (8212)24-60-66. Since 1993 the gallery has been located in a renovated building of a former seminary, built around 1888-1890. The gallery was founded in 1943 as the republic's art museum. In 1952, the gallery received the art collection of the local museum and from 1926 to 1928, it received 141 paintings of Russian and western art from the State museum. Nowadays the gallery's collection includes more than 6 000 thousand items – paintings, graphics, sculptures, decorative and applied art, and folk art. The permanent exhibitions are: «Icons, Castings and Old Manuscript Books», «Russian Art from the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century» , «Western European Art of the 17th-19th Centuries», «Modern Russian Artists», «Fine Arts of the Komi Republic» and «Russian Folk Art».

IVAN KURATOV LITERARY AND MEMORIAL MUSEUM. Ordzhonikidze St, 10. Tel: (8212) 24-13-47. The. basic collection is devoted to I.A.Kuratov – the founder of Komi literature.First opened in 1969 under the initiative of Komi writers and literature specialists. The museum has more than 11, 000 items. Besides that, there are many exhibits about the lives of other Komi writers (K.F.Zhakov, V.I.Chistalev, N.P.Popov and others), theatrical figures (N.M.Dyakonov, I.I. Abramov, E.A.Popov and others), and various artists. The museum regularly hosts lectures and creative evenings for poets and prose writers.

A.A.CHERNOV SCIENTIFIC GEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF KOMI GEOLOGY INSTITUTE OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE. Pervomaiskaya St, 54. Tel: (8212)44-70-45. Founded in 1969. There are about 100, 000 items in the museum's collection. The main collections are mineralogy and petrography, while not less interesting is the fossil exhibit.

MUSEUM OF ARCHEOLOGY AND ETHNOGRAPHY OF THE KOMI LANGUAGE, LITERATURE AND HISTORY INSTITUTE OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE. Kommunisticheskaya St, 26. Tel: (8212)24-55-64. Founded in 1967. The main activities of the museum are systematizing, processing, storage and cataloguing its collections, and also showing the achievements of archeology and ethnography in studying ancient traditional Komi culture.

MUSEUM OF THE ARCHEOLOGY AND ETHNOGRAPHY – SYKTYVKAR STATE UNIVERSITY (SSU). Kataev St, 11 (history faculty). Tel: (8212)43-16-87. Founded in 1973. The museum presents the most interesting discoveries made by SSU scientists and students during scientific field trips.

MUSEUM OF HISTORY AND EDUCATION OF THE KOMI REGION – SYKTYVKAR STATE UNIVERSITY. Oktyabrsky Prospekt, 55. Tel: (8212)43-67-21. Founded in 1982. The main collections are: documents, literary-memorial archives, old manuscripts and books, film, photo, phonographic recording, modern arts and geological.

ZOOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF SYKTYVKARSKY STATE UNIVERSITY. Petrozavodskaya St, 120. Tel: (8212)47-93-02. Founded in 1973. Systematized collection from the world of animals.

MUSEUM – HOME OF I.P. MOROZOV. Kirova St, 32, Tel: (8212)20-25-57. The museum was opened for visitors in May, 2005 as an independent department of the National Museum of Komi Republic. It is devoted to the famous political figure of Russia, former First Secretary of Komi Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Ivan Morozov. Under the leadership of Morozov Komi during 1960-1980 became one of the most dynamically developing regions of Russia.

FORESTRY MUSEUM. Syktyvkar Forest Institute, Lenina St, 39 Tel: (8212) 24-17-09, add.125, room: 307-2. The opening of Forestry museum was timed to 200-th anniversary of the Russian Forest department. The museum introduce visitors with the gallery of portraits of famous wood-growers, with the history of Russian Forest department and the forestry education. The most interesting and simultaneously unique expositions of the museum are: books of the rare editions on the forestry history (XIX century), collections of strobilas, fruits, seeds, including fossil ones, herbariums of rare plants. The museum also organize excursions “Ecological path” and “Forestry-based routes”.

FOREST MUSEUM. Tractovaya St, 100. Tel: (8212) 23-69-77. Official opening of the museum was held in April 2005. The museum’s exposition is arranged in to halls: “Forest and Human being” and “History of the timber industry of Komi Republic”. Visitors can get acquainted with the variety of forest’s exploitation. They can see a stylized corner of a traditional Komi house, including instruments, home utensils, hunting and fishing accessories.

LITERARY AND THEATRICAL MUSEUM NAMED AFTER N.M.DYAKONOV. Mayakovskaya St, 3a. Tel:(8212)2-64-98.Nikolai Dyakonov is a Komi playwriter known in Russia and nearby countries as the author of the play “Wedding with a Dowry”, a sensation in 1950s and’60s, which was the basis for a musical film of the same name. The museum’s exhibit tells not only about Dyakonov, but also about the development of all theatre in Komi. In the museum’s exhibition hall there are always exhibitions of applied arts and native crafts.

MUSEUM OF HISTORY OF THE MONDI BUSINESS PAPER TIMBER INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX. The museum is placed in the administrative building of Mondi business paper. It tells about one of the major young communist building campaigns of the 20th century, when the wood-chemical plant, the largest in Europe, quickly emerged on the site of the age-old taiga.

RAISA SMETANINA MUSEUM. Tentyukovskaya St, 301. Tel:(8212) 51-50-43. The museum exhibition is about the development of ski racing and the personal contribution which this famous Komi skier made to the World Olympic movement. Cups, medals and badges from the many competitions in which she took part and won.

EXHIBITION HALL OF THE ARTISTS' UNION. Lenin St, 28. Tel: (8212)24-86-44. Used for exhibitions of collective, thematic and individual contemporary works of artists of the Komi Republic.

Theatres

STATE ACADEMIC DRAMA THEATRE NAMED AFTER V.SAVIN. Pervomaiskaya St, 56. The republic's oldest theatre. The first national professional troupe began working here in 1930, under the direction of V.Savin. Now the theatre has two troupes, one Russian and one Komi. The repertoire is designed to please theatre-goers of all ages. The building of the oldest theatre of Komi republic is now under reconstruction. That is why the theatre has been actively engaged on tours in Komi and Russia in a whole, often performs on the stages of other republican theatres.

KOMI REPUBLIC STATE THEATRE FOR OPERA AND BALETT. Kommunisticheskaya St, 32. Tel: (8212)24-53-58. Opened in 1958, this theatre has a rich history of repertoires and successful tours. Since 1995, the theatre has put on an annual spring festival called, in English, «Syktyvkar Spring», which attracts leading artists from Moscow, St.Petersburg, other cities in Russia and as well as from places near and far abroad.

KOMI REPUBLIC FOLKLORE THEATRE. Babushkin St, 4. Tel: (8212)24-89-04. The republic's newest theatre, founded in 1992. The theatre specializes in musical and folkloric productions in the Komi language. The troupe's style can be characterized by its ability to improvise, flexibility, romanticism and the use of traditional Komi musical instruments. The theatre also provides a venue for a traditional «Divine Sparkle» festival, whose participants include amateur and professional theatrical groups from the Finno-Ugric areas of Russia, as well as from Finland, Estonia and Hungary.

KOMI REPUBLIC PHILARMONIC. Lenin St, 61. Tel: (8212)20-07-55. Founded in 1940, its basic activities consist of organizing concerts by local and visiting musicians and organizing concert tours both within and outside the Komi Republic. The main group is the «Daybreak» state song and dance ensemble. And one of the most popular chamber groups is the «Inspiration» ensemble.
